What is the real origin of Christmas?
The Roman Church began celebrating Christmas in 336 AD on 25 December, the day originally set aside by the Roman Empire as the birth date of the sun god. It is thought that this date was chosen because Christians believed that Jesus was the righteous, eternal sun, and after the mid-5th century, Christmas became a tradition in the Church and spread among the Eastern and Western Churches. The specific dates and forms of celebration differed from one denomination to another, due to the different calendars used and other reasons. Christmas customs spread to Asia mainly in the mid-nineteenth century, and Japan and Korea were influenced by Christmas culture. It has now become common practice in the West to exchange gifts, hold feasts and add to the festive atmosphere with Father Christmas and Christmas trees. Christmas has also become a public holiday in the Western world and in many other regions.

The main Christmas figure is Father Christmas, who was based on St Nicholas, a bishop who lived in the city of Mira (in present-day Turkey) in the 4th century AD. He did a lot of charitable work throughout his life, most of all helping the poor in secret. Father Christmas was his later alias, a name derived from the story of his secretly sending money to help three girls. Nicholas was revered as a saint after his death. Father Christmas is portrayed as an old man with a white beard wearing a red robe and a red hat. Every Christmas he comes from the north in a deer-drawn sleigh and enters homes by the chimney to hang Christmas presents in stockings over children’s beds or in front of the fire.
Christmas trees
Long before the arrival of Christianity, the Norse decorated their homes with plants and trees to celebrate the festive season that coincided with the winter solstice. However, the Christmas tree as we know it today is a tradition that dates back much later, to Strasbourg in the early 17th century. It was not until Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited Strasbourg – when he witnessed a Christmas tree and recorded it in his 1774 novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther ” in his 1774 novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther” – before the custom spread in Germany.
